In mid-March 2019, New-Rule’s Kyra Buchko and Kelsey Simmons from our partner, EnCompass LLC, travelled to Myanmar (Burma) and met with rule of law practitioners. The team had a chance to explore the legal changes that have occurred in Myanmar since dissolution of the military junta in 2011 and the historic 2015 elections where Aung San Suu Kyi’s party won legislative majorities. This resource rich nation is making progress, but there is significant work ahead. The years of military government leave Myanmar with a number of institutional, legal, and cultural challenges, and they will require ongoing efforts to ensure that democratic progress and economic development are solidified.
